Re-Imagining Jobs In The Age Of AI

With both the excitement and fear of AI eliminating jobs at scale, Lindsay Kohler at Forbes penned an interesting article this week.

She asked two compelling questions.

  • First, which job roles are least susceptible to AI disruption?
  • Second, which roles need to evolve in this new era of working — regardless of the impact of AI?

“AI won’t take your job, It is somebody using AI that will” is a common assertion.

Interestingly, data from Indeed’s Hiring Lab indicates that the percentage of current job postings containing AI-related terms sits at just 2-3%

This may reflect the growing consensus that AI is largely a human augmentation, rather than replacement, technology.

Which brings us to Lindsays’ second question.

Is it time for “Consultancy Re-Imagined”?

It seems that the human touch, whether it’s physical or emotional, is still something AI cannot easily replicate.

You can, of course, argue whether the “consulting” world actually has enough “human touch” or is largely the regurgitation of “theories and scripts”.

But assuming there is a substantial human element which isn’t solely about “the data”, consultants need to evolve their craft, too.

Under ever greater pressure, leaders are looking for faster “results, not reports”.

Businesses are now looking for a genuine diagnosis of business problems, not just to outsource the problem.

They want to own the answer. It has to be a collaborative partnership, delivering more value in shorter cycles.

So, the question for us is not just “will AI take my job?” but rather, “how can I re-imagine my role, the team, our processes and our business?”.

Now is the time to focus on cultivating skills that AI can’t replicate, whether that’s empathy, hands-on expertise, collaboration, or the ability to think creatively.
